FMP Brief update

I did these prints a while ago when my brief was about taking original text and redesigning it to make it more designed and simpler. the contents was just taken from a book on my bookshelf, but i have moved it on now and decided that i need to think about the contents allot more so i have chosen a book that is all about reading and how people process words ect, so i am picking quotes out of the book and i am going to experiment with the type and pick certain words out, make them larger, pick out commas, change the oder of letters ect to see how much you can strip text down to make it simpliscstic and it still works. . . . but these are the prints that i originally did.

Secret blisters / test prints

For the continuous pattern through shape i chose triangles - i have done some test prints of shapes to turn into continuous pattern and done some test prints of rows of triangles but i think they are to regimented, so i am working on a new bigger piece where they form different shapes and patterns and hopefully get this printed on Monday. But these are test prints, to experiment with colour and shapes.

interior design update

some of the layouts include the students profile picture, and some don't, i prefer the layouts that don't include their image, so if we go with one of these layouts this is how we would layout their photographs.

We have a meeting with Steve on Wednesday, so we have designed three seperate layouts to show him and choose which one he prefers. We don't want to give him to many options so we have done two quite simple one, and one that is slightly more challenging. once he has picked the layout, its just about gathering all the information and dropping it in.

over & over

for the screenprinting competition 'secret blisters' i wanted to do continuous pattern, using shapes, Vicky recommended this book for me. the patterns are more illustrative that what i want to do, but it has given me some good artists names and ideas for the competition.

Business card

over easter i am going to london for 2wks on workplacement, so i designed my business card in case i made any contacts.I just did them really rough because my website is not ready yet so i will have to re-print them when i have my website so i just screenprinted a batch of 20. when i redesign them i need to consider what is to go on the back of them . . . but for now this is my business card.

tutorial 25/3/09

I had my follow up tutorial today with Joe.i have moved on with my FMP subject and picked a book to illustrate which is all about reading and how people receive text, how the order of words can change the phrasing etc. This text ties my brief together and makes it more relevant. I looked at ee cumingst work also. I have started to extract pieces form the book that are relevant to my piece so i need to carry on experimenting with type over Easter.

secret blisters / i was stuck on this brief so i decided to talk about this the most.i had started making patterns out of shape, going by the theme of 'continuous pattern'. I think i was over thinking it,so i have decided that i just need to spend a day sitting in in-design creating pages of shapes until i come up with a pattern variation that i am happy with, and then experiment with colours, and stock etc. The deadline for the competition is the 2nd April, so i have a while yet,but this brief is taking up too much of my time so i need to resolve it tomorrow and print it next week.

Wednesday 18/03/09 - half way crit

Displaying all my work today at the crit was helpfull in making me realise what it was i needed to do. I have realised that i need to pin down my briefs and write a brief that states exactly what it is i am doing. With the live briefs i am ok, but with my self directed brief on simplicity i feel like i am going of the track abit, but if i rewrite my project statement and adjust my rationale then i should be ok.

Music in the mountains -
This brief is finished so i didn't need crited on it in the sense that i wanted questions on how to improve it, i wanted to speak to people about how i should represent it in my portfolio. I didn't no if i should photograph it or use a digital version. Most people said that digital version would be fine but i am thinking that photographing it would be nicer.

Secret blisters -
The brief is really open so i have struggled with it so far, there are no specifications for it, just a format size. I wanted to produce something that stuck to the theme of simplicity so i went to screen print to test colours and shapes. That's as far as i have got with it so far. I showed it in the crit but there was not really anything to comment on yet, but it was good to hear people say that they liked it and keep going with it - this is my most current brief so i will work on it ready for the tutorials next wk.

FMP / Keep it simple -
This is the brief that i needed crited on the most. It fits with the rationale that i set out for myself but doesn't really fit with the breif i wrote out. I said that i wanted to produce simplistic images, but instead it has come about using type and rewriting text. I have decided that what i need to do is find a book that is all about type and image and how it is received and illustrate this through type, restructure the words so that they read differently, pick out words make them bold, change the commas, make use of colours. On the other hand i will start naming simple images from anything that takes my fancy. This will be a separate brief, and one that is aimed more around one day briefs, just to keep my practice going and a quick way to produce work. For the type brief i will look at different types of information, such as bus / train timetables, poetry and literature and combine these with the the theory produced from the book i will find on type and image and how this is perceived, I could maybe Even be an essay rather than a book that my imagery becomes based around.
So the plan of action now is to write up these two separate briefs tomorrow and keep going with the type brief and start the visual brief, all the while researching book layouts and novels and this is what i ultimately want to achieve.

Interior design year book -
The feed back from this was good, we showed our logo and our layouts. I was a bit concerned that the logo ID09 wasn't clear but people seemed to get it, and when it is in context with the book think it will be clear. So far the layouts, people seemed to like them, we had some minor adjustments that needed to be made such as making the images of the students work larger. I am still not entirely happy with the layout, it still needs some work done on it but i think we just need to keep going on it.

End of year show -
Again this brief didn't really need crited on but it was good to show just so that i could see how much work i had done and see what i wanted to include in my portfolio. We also got the feedback form from the marketing team, we had some really good feedback which was encouraging so i will defiantly include it as a portfolio piece.

logo

Today we did some logo designs to brand the end of year book.We decided the logo should be ID09. Im a bit worried that it doesn't read as this. The aim is to build the logo for the front cover, and give the students a brand. Its not finished, but its a start. I don't think it reads correctly so maybe we need to change the tail on the 9 or change the colours.

ID09 - Update

We worked on our layouts today doe the interior design book, this is what we have come up with so far. Its not quite finished, but think its pretty much the final layout, we just need to show the students it and see what they think.

Herbert w. Kapaitzki

I came across Kapitzki when looking through the book pictograms, icons & signs. Apparently he was revolutionary in the designing of signs. He has also done some editorial work which is kept quite simplistic and you can see the influence of signs.

Sam Winston

I was aiming to produce a book for my final piece, but perhaps i could produce something more like this, that folds out, rather than a bound book.

I have looked at Sam Winstons work before, but it is quite appropriate to the work that i want to produce now.He experiments with individual letters to create image, which is something that i could start experimenting with.I want to start making certain letters or commas stand out , making them larger, or using different colours, printing only the full stops and commas without the text running down the page est.i will start experimenting with commas and full stops in pencil first, and then move them down into screenprint.

e e cummings

I had my tutorial with Joe yesterday. I have decided that i need to narrow my brief down so that it has more of a purpose. So perhaps instead of choosing a book to illustrate i could pick poetry, or short stories.I also need to think about format / fonts / size / colours. So i have started to look at e e cummings poetry, because he treats some of them typographically and have a strange structure to them, that i could use in my final pieces.

Interior design

We did the interior design shoot on wednesday, Johnny took the photos, they are all going to look like this one. They have come out really well, but not all the students could attend,o we are going to have to decide how we are going to display the pictures throughout the book. We may just have to put all the photos in the front, and not have a photo with their profile page.

John Haggarty talk

Sir John Heggarty gave us a talk on Thursday, his background is in advertising, but it was still interesting to see what he said about concept and how he comes up with his ideas. He talked about the power of strategy, the power of truth and the power of irreverence, but i think the most interesting thing he said was the power of deduction. The idea of deduction is also very relevant to my FMP.
He talked about reducing things down and said that simplicity was something that we are absolutely obsessed, simple strap lines & simple images. He said all great ideas come from presenting reduced information. He stated simplicity allowed us to see the essence of an idea, it allowed for no sloppiness, and makes ideas really sharp. I suppose this opinion is very true for advertising, but is it the same for design? I intend to send him an interview asking him some further questions on the subject of deduction.
I didn't agree with everything Heggarty said , but i think his ideas in deduction are interesting.

Lamosca

Lamosca is a Graphic Design agency based in Barcelona. They do varying work, from identity to websites, but most of their work has a similar style. They do allot of information graphics, so most of their work is quite simplistic, so it is still relevant for me to look at, especialy their identity designs, because they are kept simple, yet still portray the information needed.
